Our Story.

A Kiwi-Nepali Fusion Born at the Beach

Crafting Flavorful Fusion with Meaning

A Restaurant Rooted in Culture, Family, and Flavor

Yak & Fern isn’t just a place to eat—it’s where Nepali heritage meets Kiwi comfort in every bite. We’re a family-owned restaurant based in New Brighton, Christchurch. we’re building something more than a business—we’re creating a space where food becomes memory, meaning, and connection.

Why we do it?

A Restaurant Rooted in Culture, Family, and Flavor

We started Yak & Fern because Nepali cuisine was misunderstood and underrepresented. Most people confused it with Indian food.
So we built a restaurant that isn’t just about selling meals—but about:

  • Putting Nepali food on the map in New Zealand
  • Creating a space where culture feels alive and respected
  • Building something meaningful from scratch
  • A Mission That Goes Beyond Food

We Serve One of the Best Mo:Mo!

One Dumpling at a time!! At Yak & Fern, momo is more than our signature dish—it’s our statement. At Yak & Fern, momos aren’t just dumplings—they’re our signature, our obsession, and our cultural calling card. Momo isn’t just a dish in Nepal—it’s a ritual. A street snack. A family tradition. A food that brings people together. Its origins trace back to Tibetan influence in the Himalayan region. As the dish travelled into Nepal, it evolved—wrapped in local spices, filled with buffalo or vegetables, and served with bold, tangy chutneys. Today, momos are everywhere in Nepal—from street corners in Kathmandu to family dinners in Pokhara.
